PORTFOLIO ENTRY 3. SPEECH ACTS

There are two different kinds of statements: constatives and performatives. Constatives are sentences that describe something as true or false while performatives are sentences that denote or inspire actions. Performatives depend on felicity conditions (context and reception) to have the power to denote such actions. When words themselves are actions, then they are known as speech acts and they include functions such as ordering and requesting, among others. Performatives might be followed or broken.
